Interview with Reuters about current developments in U.S. coffee consumption

Dear Coffee Lovers,

in a recent interview with Reuters in New York, I had the opportunity to share my perspective on current developments in U.S. coffee consumption.

The article highlights a notable shift: Coffee consumption at home in the United States has reached its highest level in more than a decade.

According to the report, this development is primarily driven by three factors:

  • the continued impact of remote and hybrid work, reducing out-of-home consumption occasions
  • rising (coffee) prices, leading consumers to adjust spending behavior
  • ongoing improvements in home coffee technology

In the interview with Reuters, I highlighted that “home machines now deliver near out-of-home quality.”

This observation reflects a broader structural trend. The quality gap between in-home and out-of-home consumption has narrowed significantly, enabling consumers to replicate café-style experiences in their own kitchens.

As outlined in the Reuters coverage, this shift is not purely cyclical. It reflects a change in consumption patterns that has been building over recent years and is now becoming increasingly visible in market data. For the coffee industry, this raises important considerations regarding channel dynamics, consumer behavior, and long-term value creation.

The full article provides a comprehensive overview of these developments and their implications for the U.S. market.
